The garden seems larger as there is much to see and all first rate. But the walled garden is the spectacular climax of the garden. This is a perfect mixture of functional vegetable garden and very good contemporary planting.
Hornbeam hedges create a central axis across the garden, dividing the space into a series of smaller enclosures. Perennial borders give way to a small grove of decorative trees, which provide shade for the summerhouse area. Outside the main garden, the long vista continues to a large grass mound crowned by an obelisk.
Rycote has a long history. The house was rebuilt in the 1560s as a great palace, but almost all was demolished in 1807. In the 1930s the remains were restored. The current owners have restored the estate over the last 20 years. The lake has been dredged, the astonishing chapel taken in hand and the gardens designed by Elizabeth Banks.
