Knoyle Place lies in the shelter of a south-facing slope, which becomes a woodland garden, in spring filled with acid-loving Magnolias and Rhododendrons, thick with bluebells. The south façade of the house supports a huge Magnolia grandiflora and a stone terrace lies beside the older wing of the house softened by swathes of perennials.
The garden at Lower Lye gradually reveals itself, one delight after another. An arch in a beech hedge leads into an enclosed white garden. Hedges and perennial borders surround a Liquidambar. The main lawn has a spectacular view towards Stourhead and King Alfred’s Tower.
Tania Compton has redesigned the formal garden around FonthillHouse, with interconnected spaces leading towards a fountain set in a circularenclosure. Above the house, a relatively new woodland garden, filled with spring-floweringshrubs, has been planted under the guidance of Chelsea gold medal designer,Marie-Louise Agius.
