At Allt y bela, an isolated late-medieval farmhouse, Arne Maynard is making a restrained and understated garden to allow the house and landscape to take centre stage. Yew cones and spheres punctuate the garden, beech is trimmed into spirals and tiered stands, box, clipped into organic shapes, create patterns in the wildflower bank.
The Arts and Crafts, Italianate garden was designed by H. Avray Tipping, Architectural Editor of Country Life. His design has remained intact and was enhanced by new planting to the design of Sarah Price (who designed the gardens at the 2012 Olympic Park). From the generous stone terrace in front of the house, wide steps lead to great yew topiaries which are softened by Sarah’s borders filled with grasses and perennials.
The Green seems very remote and its setting, gazing eastwards, on a shoulder of hill surrounded on three sides by a loop of the River Wye, is magical. The hillside setting lends itself to terraces and the highest point of the garden is an enclosed south-facing courtyard, filled with roses, citrus trees and grey-leaved perennials sprawling over wide cobbled steps.
