Tour 13 Gloucestershire

Well Cottage, Little Badminton

The garden is enclosed by walls and drops in terraces down the gentle slope with views out into the surrounding parkland. A main vista runs through an arch, in the style of William Kent, to a wooden gate in the far wall. Clipped box, yew pyramids and fastigiate hornbeams give structure in the winter. The formality of the layout is beautifully balanced by the abundance of the planting, mainly perennials with a mass of shrub and climbing roses.

Daisy Green House, Wotton-under-Edge

As if magicked from the banks of the Brenta Canal in the Veneto to the lee of the Cotswold escarpment lies a remarkable 21st century house in the tradition of a Palladian villa. From the house, steps descend into a sunken terrace and up again to a lawn with a Chinese bridge leading out into the landscape.

Wortley House, Wotton-under-Edge

Behind the 18th century house, a walled garden has borders filled with perennials, but a gothick doorway, framed with honeysuckle, beckons towards the wider garden beyond. The route leads along a hazel walk, into the picking garden, across a stream, through a herb garden to a vista of an obelisk framed by high hornbeam hedges.
