The house was extended in the 17th and 18th centuries and matches perfectly the formal and topiaried style of the garden, where box is clipped into patterns to form parterres, knots and mazes, softened by great billowing mounds of rosemary and lavender. All is framed by tall hornbeam hedges cut into arches and curved into theatrical apses
The garden was created with advice from the late Pascal Cribier, who designed the magnificent contemporary potager in the walled garden. The rose garden surrounds a formal pool with Aralias to give height and structure and Rosa x odorata ‘Sanguinea’ by the edge of the pool.
The Regency Gothick house was built in 1828 on a slope overlooking an idyllic, wooded valley. Steps lead down from the terrace to a lawn bounded by a low box hedge with borders flanking a south-facing summer house. The brick and flint walled garden has been almost entirely replanted, overbearing shrubs and ancient cherries being replaced with shrub roses and softly billowing masses of perennials as well as tender Salvias and Dahlias to extend the season.
