The garden at Charlton Farm is only ten years old, but has a beguiling combination of established maturity and the freshness of youth. Theentrance has crisp box beds filled with Nepeta and Allium and the garden unfolds with a sequence of wonderfully planted spaces ranging from an intimateherb garden, to the more recent woodland garden.
The wonderful four-acre garden around the late 17th century house at Cadenham Manor was laid out from the 1940s. From the forecourt a stroll through the orangery leads to the first of a series of formal spaces immediately around the house. Further away, the garden relaxes and spreads around spaces enclosed by clipped hedges.
The River Avon, a constant presence in this wonderful garden, divides the formal garden around the house from the woodland walks beyond. The house is approached through an enclosed garden of roses, generously underplanted, surrounded by low-clipped yew hedges. Behind lies the garden designed by Arne Maynard in 2008.
