Arne Maynard designed the garden around the swimming pool and the walled garden, which is the focus for Polly’s artisan floristry business, Bayntun Flowers. A walk of pleached crab apples leads from the house to the walled garden, passing beds filled with immaculately trained roses, sheltered by a high brick wall, along which are the borders that provides many of the flowers that Polly uses.
Isabel and Julian Bannerman were given the brief to create a four-part garden that reflected the owners’ lives. So, the garden spectacularly commemorates, in quarters separated by avenues of pleached hornbeams, England, Africa, China and Italy. The garden wonderfully continues to evolve with new glasshouses and a recent kitchen and cutting garden.
The ground drops steeply away from the house, with a terrace filled with summer-flowering perennials and structural shrubs. Below an impressive ha-ha, lies the great curving sweep of lavender, and a box parterre planted with tulips and Itoh Peonies.
