Tour 6 Devon

Silver Street Farm, Uffculme

As with all the most exciting gardens, this is a work in progress as farm buildings are taken down or restored and the garden expands around them. The garden to the front of the house is deceptively demure, but behind the tour de force is the spectacular border; sixty-four metres long and nine metres at its widest, paths snake through it wide enough to ride a pony.

Cadhay, Ottery St Mary

Cadhay is a 16th and early 17th century house behind an 18th century façadeand the two-acre garden wraps round it. Topiaried yews strut across the lawn, double herbaceous borders lead to ponds and the woodland gardens beyond. The extensive kitchen garden has been brought back to life and productivity.

South Wood Farm, Cotleigh

In 2008, Arne Maynard was commissioned to redesign the garden around an ancient, thatched yeoman’s farmhouse set deep in the Blackdown Hills. Approached through a cobbled yard, the garden entrance is marked by a heavy oak gate which leads into the Front Court, a sheltered space by the house, protected by original stone walls and espaliered crab apples.
