The approach to the house is through a gravel garden planted with Perovskia, Euphorbia myrsinites and Santolina. The garden blends formality and wildness with an orchard leading to vistas of hornbeams, clipped into blocks and pyramids. Box balls keep clouds of fennel at bay, borders billow with Eryngiums, Sedums, cardoons, grasses and roses mingle with meadow grasses.
Pythouse stands in glorious south-facing parkland. Its three-acre walled garden is discreetly behind a screen of trees. Here, in 2016, Piers Milburn created an interacting garden and restaurant. The restaurant, within the walls, opens onto the garden, which liberally supplies the restaurant kitchen with seasonal fruit and vegetables.
Double avenues of limes stretch to the hills and garden rooms of clipped hedges, decorated with standard Wisterias, echo the architecture of the house. An immaculate potager, a decorative orchard, a cascade into a lake and a minimalist swimming pool, are among the many delights of this magnificent garden.
